You laid down a plain gray prime coat, picked up a brush, and stared at a flat featureless surface with no idea where the light is coming from. What Zenithal Priming Actually Is
Zenithal priming creates a fake light source before you paint. The name comes from “zenith”: the point directly overhead. By applying a dark base, a mid-tone from the side, and a light color from above, you simulate ambient light hitting the model from the top. Raised surfaces catch the light; recesses stay dark.
That simulated light serves two purposes. First, it gives you a guide: when you’re painting and can’t decide where to highlight or where to let the shadow fall, the zenithal layer tells you. What You Need
Rattle cans:
- Tamiya Fine Surface Primer (Black): thin formula that preserves resin detail, excellent resin adhesion
- Citadel Chaos Black: alternative black primer, widely available
- A mid-gray rattle can primer: any gray primer formulated for models will work; Tamiya Fine Surface Primer (Gray) is a clean match to the black can
- Army Painter Colour Primer: Matt White: thin matte white, thin enough to not obscure detail on the final light pass
Setup:
- Painting handle or blu-tack base so you can rotate the model without touching it
- A cardboard box to spray in if working indoors
- Paper towels: spray primer drifts
The Three-Pass Technique
Pass 1: Black from all sides
The black prime is your shadow layer. Apply it with full-coverage intent: no bare resin should be visible anywhere. Hold the can 10-12 inches from the model and apply in thin, even passes. Rotate the model to cover every surface. Two thin passes beat one thick pass.

Pass 2: Gray at 45 degrees
This is the mid-tone pass (the ambient light from the sides. Hold the can at roughly 45 degrees to the model. Not horizontal, not pointing straight down) at an angle, coming from above-and-to-the-side. Apply light passes and rotate the model.
The goal of this pass is to hit all the surfaces that face upward or sideways while leaving the undersides and deep recesses black. You should see a clear tonal shift as you apply: surfaces facing the can go gray; surfaces facing down or hidden in folds stay black. If everything goes gray uniformly, you’re either too close, spraying too heavy, or holding the can at too shallow an angle.
After this pass, a well-primed model should have three zones: black recesses and undercuts, gray mid-surfaces and angled faces, and no white yet.
Pass 3: White from above
This is the zenith pass: the light from directly overhead. Hold the model at arm’s length, hold the can directly above it, and apply a short, targeted burst. Significantly less spray than either previous pass. The white should land on the topmost raised surfaces only.
This pass is easy to overdo. One or two short bursts from directly above, rotating the model slowly to cover the top surfaces. Walk away and look at it. The white should be visible on the crown of the head, the top of shoulders, the highest folds in cloth, the flat top face of armor plates. If the white is also on the sides and mid surfaces, the pass was too heavy.
When it’s right, the model looks like it’s sitting under a single overhead light. The top surfaces are bright, the sides are gray, the recesses are dark. That’s exactly what you want.
Drying Before You Paint
Rattle can primer on resin needs 6-8 hours to fully cure. The surface will feel dry in 30 minutes, but the primer is still cross-linking underneath. Paint applied over partially cured primer can lift or reactivate, especially contrast paints and washes that carry a lot of medium.
The safe play is to prime in the evening and paint the next morning. In humid conditions, give it the full 24 hours. This is one of those places where patience is just efficiency: a ruined contrast layer because you rushed the drying is more time lost than waiting overnight.
What to Do After Zenithal Priming

Contrast paints: Apply contrast directly over the zenithal prime. Speed painting (all contrast, no layering): Paint everything in single contrast or speedpaint passes, let the zenithal do all the shading work, and just go back to brighten the extreme highlights on metal edges and armor peaks. Common Mistakes
White pass too heavy. The most common failure mode. The whole model turns light gray instead of keeping a dark-to-light gradient. If this happens: let the primer fully cure, then do a light black wash diluted heavily with water to knock the highlights back and reclaim the shadows. Once that dries, you can still paint over it.

Fisheye or beading on the surface. The resin surface had IPA residue or skin oil on it before priming. Any uncured resin that escaped the wash-and-cure process can also cause adhesion failure. Wash the model with dish soap and water, let it dry completely, then prime.
Gray pass from too low an angle. The mid-tone ended up covering recesses that should stay black. The angle needs to be above horizontal. Think of it as trying to hit surfaces that face partially toward the sky. If the recesses are going gray, angle the can higher.
White visible on the sides of the model, not just the top. The white pass wasn’t aimed directly down. Hold the can directly above and spray downward, not at an angle. Or rotate the model so the top is always facing the can directly.
