Curing is the step everyone underestimates and half of new printers get wrong. You pull a model off the build plate, rinse it, and it looks finished. It isn’t. Until that resin gets a proper dose of UV light, the print is soft, slightly tacky, and chemically half-done. Cure it badly and you get one of two failures: a sticky, weak mini that warps on the shelf a month later, or a brittle, color-shifted one that snaps the first time it takes a tumble off the table.
I cure every Saturn print on my bench, and after a couple hundred minis I’ve settled on a routine that’s genuinely hard to mess up. What Curing Actually Does
Resin prints by UV light. Inside the printer, each layer gets a precise flash of 405nm light that hardens it just enough to stick to the layer below. That on-printer exposure is deliberately conservative, because the goal during printing is dimensional accuracy, not full hardness. The result is a model that holds its shape but is only partly polymerized.
Post-curing finishes that job. A second, fuller dose of 405nm UV drives the resin to complete its chemical reaction, which is what gives the print its real strength, rigidity, and stable color. Skip it and the resin keeps slowly reacting on its own (and off-gassing) for weeks, which is exactly why an under-cured mini warps, stays faintly sticky, and smells.
The catch is that the same UV that strengthens a print will, in excess, embrittle it. Curing is a window, not a “more is better” dial. The rest of this guide is about hitting that window.
Wash Before You Cure, Every Time
This is the rule that saves the most prints: never cure a model that still has uncured resin on it.
Curing permanently locks whatever sits on the surface in place. If there’s a film of sticky resin in the recesses when the UV hits, it cures into a glossy, blurry shell that buries the fine detail you printed at 0.025mm to capture. On a face or a chainmail texture, that’s the difference between a crisp mini and a melted-looking one.
So the order is always wash, then cure. Rinse in IPA (or water, for water-washable resin) until every surface is clean and squeaky, paying special attention to deep recesses, the gaps between fingers, and the insides of hollow models. Only once it’s genuinely clean does it go under the light.

How Long to Cure: A Resin-Type Cheat Sheet
Cure time depends on three things: your resin type, how powerful your UV source is, and the size of the model. There is no single magic number, but here is the framework I actually use as a starting point.

Two things to internalize. First, these are totals for a small 28-32mm miniature with rotation; a fist-sized monster or a chunk of terrain needs the higher end or a bit more. Second, when in doubt, start low. You can always add another 60-second burst and check. You cannot un-cure a brittle, yellowed model.

The Routine: Curing a Miniature Step by Step
Here’s the actual sequence I run for every print.
Step 1: Wash Until It’s Clean
Covered above, but it’s step one for a reason. No uncured resin on the surface before it sees UV. Clean the recesses.
Step 2: Dry It Off
Shake off excess liquid and pat the model dry. For dry-air curing, a film of IPA left on the surface can leave a faint frosted finish, so give it a minute to air-dry or clear deep pockets with a bulb blower. (If you’re going to water-cure, skip ahead; wet is fine there.)
Step 3: Set Your Time
Pull your number from the cheat sheet above based on your resin and light source. Set a timer. Curing “by feel” until it looks done is how prints get over-cured.
Step 4: Cure With Rotation
Put the mini on the turntable in a wash-and-cure station so UV reaches every face evenly. If you’re using a bare nail lamp, set the model on a cheap motorized display turntable, or flip it by hand a couple of times through the cycle. The undersides and overhangs are what stay soft when a model cures flat and stationary.
Step 5: Check and Rest
Pull it out, let it sit at room temperature for a few minutes (resin keeps hardening briefly as it cools), then check. Hard, non-tacky, no smell. If a thick area still gives under a fingernail, give it another short burst.

The Budget Method: A UV Nail Lamp
You do not need a station to start. The sub-$30 hack that the whole hobby ran on for years is a UV gel nail lamp, the kind sold for manicures.
The one thing that matters is the wavelength and power. Get a lamp rated at 36W or higher that emits 405nm (or close to it). Many cheap nail lamps are tuned for 365nm/405nm gel polish and work fine for resin; a few are weaker UV-A and barely cure at all, so check before you buy.
How to use one well:
- Cure longer than a station. 10 to 20 minutes for a small mini, more for big models.
- Flip the model at least once, ideally a few times, since nail lamps light from above and leave the bottom soft.
- Add a reflector. Lining the inside with aluminum foil bounces stray UV back onto the shadowed sides and noticeably evens out the cure.
- Don’t crowd it. One or two minis at a time so the light isn’t blocked.
It’s slower and fussier than a station, but it absolutely works. Treat it as the on-ramp, then upgrade to a proper wash-and-cure unit when batch printing makes the time savings worth it.
Cure Under Water for a Glass-Hard Surface
If there’s one trick in this guide that punches above its weight, it’s this: cure the model submerged in plain water.
Oxygen inhibits the surface cure of resin. That thin layer of air-exposed resin on the outside of a print is exactly what stays faintly tacky no matter how long you blast it with UV in open air. Water displaces that oxygen. Cure the mini sitting in a clear container of water and the entire surface, including the skin, polymerizes fully hard.
In practice: drop the dried (or freshly water-rinsed) model into a clear glass or plastic container of room-temperature water, set it on or near your turntable, and run your normal cure time. The water is UV-transparent enough that cure times barely change. You pull out a model with a clean, hard, paint-ready surface and zero stickiness.
This is especially worth it for water-washable resin, which is more prone to a gummy finish than IPA-cleaned standard resin. A liter of Elegoo water-washable resin plus a water cure is about the lowest-hassle clean-and-cure loop you can run at home.
Temperature Matters More Than You Think
Resin is temperature-sensitive, and curing is no exception. A cold garage in winter is the most common reason a model comes out of an apparently correct cure cycle still soft. The chemical reaction slows down when the resin and the surrounding air are cold, so the same five minutes that fully cures a print at room temperature under-cures it at 50 degrees.
If you print and cure somewhere cold, warm the model and the resin to room temperature first, and consider curing a touch longer.
The opposite extreme is the trap people fall into with free UV. Setting minis on a sunny windowsill or outside “for a while” feels efficient, but the sun is an uncontrolled, very strong UV source combined with heat. Leave a model out for hours and you’ll over-cure it: brittle, yellowed, with hairline cracks through the thin details. Sunlight curing can work for a few measured minutes, but it’s roulette, and a $20 nail lamp gives you control the sun never will.
Common Curing Mistakes
In rough order of how often I see them (and how often I made them early on):
- Curing before washing. Locks a resin film over your detail. Wash first, always.
- Over-curing in sunlight. Brittle, yellow, cracked. The fix is measured time and an indoor UV source.
- Under-curing in a cold space. Soft, tacky, warps later. Warm up first and cure a bit longer.
- Curing flat and stationary. Soft undersides. Rotate or flip.
- Fighting a tacky surface in open air. That’s oxygen inhibition. Cure under water and it’s gone.
- Using a weak or wrong-wavelength lamp. Not all “UV” lamps emit 405nm at usable power. Check the spec.
Most of these trace back to treating curing as “leave it under the light until it looks done.” It isn’t a vibe; it’s a timed step with a known window.
How to Know a Mini Is Properly Cured
You don’t need a meter. A correctly cured miniature is:
- Hard. A fingernail pressed into a thick section doesn’t dent it.
- Non-tacky. The surface is dry and smooth, not even slightly sticky.
- Odor-free. Strong resin smell means uncured resin is still present. Re-wash and re-cure.
- Color-stable. It hasn’t shifted noticeably yellow or darkened (a sign you’ve gone too far).

Curing is the cheapest place to make a big jump in print quality, because the gear is inexpensive and the technique is simple once you stop guessing at the time. Wash clean, dry, cure for a measured window with rotation, lean on a water cure when you want a flawless surface, and respect temperature. Do that and your minis come off the bench hard, crisp, and ready for primer.
